A computerised tomography scan (CAT or CT scan) produces cross-sectional images of the body using computers and rotating X-ray devices. These images are more informative than regular X-ray images. In different parts of the body, they will reveal the soft tissues, blood vessels and bones. You lie in a tunnel-like chamber during a CAT scan, as the inside of the machine spins and takes a series of X-rays from various angles. Then these images are sent to a computer, where they are combined to produce images of the body’s slices or cross-sections. They can also be combined to create a 3-D picture of a given body area.
